Gandantegchinlen Monastery or Gandan is one of the most visited Buddhist monasteries in Mongolia since it is located in Ulaanbaatar. The communist regime of Mongolia destroyed the vast majority of Buddhist temples and monasteries during the 1930s, and it is estimated that about 15,000 monks lost their lives or freedom in the process. Gandantegchinlen in Mongolian means "Great Place of Complete Joy", and there are currently about 150 monks living here. The biggest attraction is a copper statue of Avalokiteśvara, 26.5 meters high, gilded with gold leaves, and decorated with precious stones. It is the tallest indoor statue in the whole world.
