Erdene Zuu Monastery or Stotinu Blaga Monastery is the oldest and most important Buddhist monastery in Mongolia. Although today 53 percent of the Mongols are of the Buddhist faith, Stalin's and communist times brought this monastery to the brink of ruin. Before communism, this monastery had about a hundred temples, 300 gers, and about 1000 resident monks. During communism, it was completely closed, and many monks were killed or taken into gulags. Nowadays, the monastery has been renovated and is beautiful, but it is far from its most glorious times.
