The Majete Wildlife Reserve shares the fate of most African national parks. During the 70s and 80s, wildlife was decimated, and many species were completely extinct through poaching and habitat destruction. Since 2003, the situation has been improving, so through the resettlement program, lions, elephants, rhinos, hippos, hyenas, leopards, and buffaloes can be found here again. Tourists especially like to visit Kapachira Falls on the river Shire, to see hippos, and many other animals as they come to drink water.
