Elmina Castle

Elmina Castle was built by the Portuguese in the 15th century and represents the oldest building erected by Europeans in sub-Saharan Africa that is still standing. Originally called Castelo de São Jorge da Mina, it served as a shopping mall. Only later Elmina Castle got an infamous role in the slave trade on the Atlantic slave trade route. The fortress is on the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
