Not far from Emba Soir, the highest mountain in Eritrea lies is a complex of archeological sites called Quahaito or Qohaito. The site is located on the plateau of the same name 2500 meters above sea level and is under UNESCO protection. The ruins are associated with pre-Aksumite civilization. There is evidence of human activity at this site about seven thousand years ago. A connected site called Matara is 15 kilometers south of this site, so make sure to check it out too.
