The Kykkos Monastery is the most famous, the most luxurious, and the monastery to which most legends are connected. The monastery is located 20 kilometers west of the village of Pedoulas. It was built by Byzantine emperor Alexios I Komnenos in the late 11th century. It is dedicated to the Virgin Mary and is home to a special icon of the Holy Virgin, which is believed to have been painted by the Apostle Luke, one of the four evangelists.
