Itchan Kala is an inner, walled part of the city of Khiva. Located near the desert, Itchan Kala was of great importance in the past for caravans moving along the Silk Road, as this was the last opportunity to supply themselves before facing the harsh conditions in the desert. This part of the city abounds in historical monuments, old houses, and mosques. What captures the attention of visitors the most is the wall about ten meters high, which encloses Itchan Kala, and which has four gates. Inside the walls are studded buildings intersected by narrow alleys.
