Köneürgench or Konye-Urgench is one of the historical gems of Turkmenistan located in the north of the country. In this municipality lies the old town of Ürgenç or Ürgench, which houses the ruins of the capital Khwarazm, part of the Achaemenid Empire. Ürgench was located on the Silk Road and the banks of the Amu-Darya River, so its importance was great. The Ürgench site houses buildings and monuments dating from the 11th to the 16th century. There are fortresses, gates, a magnificent 60-meter high minaret, caravanserai, mosques, and a mausoleum. During the 18th century, this city was abandoned by the inhabitants who set out to establish a new settlement. Since then, the city has remained almost intact. The Köneürgench in the UNESCO World Heritage Sites list in 2005.
