The building that for many marks the old center of Lome, and which dominates this city district is the Cathédrale du Sacré-Cœur de Lomé. This cathedral is the seat of the Archdiocese of Lome, one of the seven districts of the Catholic Church in Togo. The Cathédrale du Sacré-Cœur de Lomé was built in 1902, after only 17 months of construction. The striking exterior of the red-and-white color of the neo-Gothic building dominates the surrounding buildings that surround it. The late Pope Paul John II served Holy Mass in this cathedral in 1985.
