Rijksmuseum

The Rijksmuseum (National Museum) in Amsterdam is the largest art museum in the Netherlands. Although it was founded in The Hague in 1798, it was moved to Amsterdam in 1808. The museum building dates back to 1885 and is the work of Pierre Cuypers. The collection includes about 1 million items from history and art from 1200 to 2000, with about 8000 items on display. The size and quality of the collection are perhaps best illustrated by the fact that after the renovation of the museum in 2013, 2.2 million visitors visited the museum during that year and almost 2.5 million visitors during the following 2014.
