Stephen the Great Central Park is one of the central points of the capital of Moldova, Chisinau. The park was set up by an engineer of the Russian Imperial Army in 1818, during the reign of Tsar Alexander I. One of the first lovers of this park was Pushkin. His statue is the first monument erected in the park, and to this day, it commemorates a famous writer. The second statue placed in the park was the statue of Stephen the Great, after whom the park got its name. It was placed at the entrance to the park, and since its installation, it has been a kind of landmark for meeting people. Thus, in the period 1989-1991, Moldovan Nationalists and Pro-Soviet Moldavians met there, and these meetings often turned into conflicts.
