Nevado de Toluca is a long-extinct volcano, located not far from the city of Toluca, southwest of Mexico City. The height of the highest peak, Pico del Fraile, is 4704 meters. It is assumed that the volcano was about 900 meters higher, but the eruption, which is supposed to have taken place 25,000 years ago, blew up the top. Although the area of the volcano is known as the Nevado de Toluca National Park, recently, it is a protected area due to the ore resources nearby. Tourists like to make a day-trip to the second highest peak of Pico de Aquila (4620) and the two lakes at the bottom of the basin.
