There are 800 mosques in Kuwait City, the state capital. The official state mosque, the largest and most lavish of all is the Grand Mosque. It was opened in 1986 and survived the war intact. The large prayer room can accommodate 10,000 men and 950 women in the women's room. Grand Mosque is a beautiful building that, with its surroundings, makes it one of the most glamorous religious buildings in the Persian Gulf.
