Fort Jesus is a Portuguese fortress located on Mombasa Island, the old part of Mombasa. It was built in the late 16th century and was the only fortification controlled by the Portuguese on the Swahili Coast. Today, the Education Department, Old Town Conservation Office, and Conservation Lab are located here. Fort Jesus has been on the UNESCO list since 2011, although it has been a popular destination for tourists who come to Mombasa for decades.
