Askja Caldera

Accessible for a few months of the year, Askja Caldera is a remote part of the central highlands. The surrounding mountains were formed during volcanic activity and used during astronauts training for the Apollo program. Öskjuvatn lake is one of the most photogenic spots in the area, otherwise the second deepest lake in Iceland.
