Arch 22 is a monument to July 22, 1994, when the coup d’état took place in the Gambia when the president Dawd Jawar and the government were overthrown. The coup d’état took place under the leadership of then-young lieutenant Yahya Jammeh. This arch towers 36 meters above the road leading to the capital Banjul. At the foot of the arch stands a statue of the Unknown Soldier, who has a child in one hand while the other shows a sigh for victory. There is also a cafe and a small museum with ethnographic exhibits.
