Central America sits at the junction of several tectonic plates that cause an unusually high density of active volcanoes and a multitude of volcanic islands. Poas volcano is over 2700 meters high and it's located in the central part of the country, in the national park of the same name, which boasts exceptional biodiversity. Since 1989, the volcano has emitted larger amounts of gases that cause the phenomenon of acid rain, damaging the surrounding ecosystems, so conservation efforts have intensified.
