The Grand Place is the central square, and one of the most important landmarks of Brussels. It was used as a market place until the end of 1959 and referred to as Grote-Markt (Grand Market). This square is surrounded by historical buildings, city Town Hall, King's House (also known as Breadhouse), and luxuriant guildhalls. Every two years, there is a Flower Carpet set on this square. Flower Carpet is 24 by 77 meters, made of a million colorful begonias. It is considered one of the most beautiful squares in Europe and was taken under the protection of UNESCO as a World Heritage Site in 1998.
